Section branching, quizzes and response settings

The form editor has three tabs: Questions, Responses and Settings. This article covers sections and branching in the Questions tab, and the quiz and response options in the Settings tab.

How do I split a form into sections?

Click Add section at the bottom of the Questions tab to create a new section. Respondents move through the form one section at a time by clicking Next. Each section has move up, move down and delete buttons for reordering or removing it. When you delete a section, its questions merge into the neighbouring section.

I want to send people to different sections based on their answer

This works only with Multiple choice and Dropdown questions.

1. Create at least two sections (the menu item is disabled while there is only one).
2. In the question's More settings menu, turn on Go to section based on answer.
3. For each option, choose where to go: "Continue to next section", a specific section, or "Submit form".

You can also set where to go after a whole section with the "After section N" selector below it.

The branching rules are confusing

• If a section has several branching questions, the target of the last branching question answered applies.
• If there is no branching answer, the "After section N" setting applies. If that is not set either, the form goes to the next section, and after the last section it submits.
• If a target leads back to a section the respondent has already passed, the form submits at that point.
• Required questions are checked only in sections the respondent actually went through. Answers in skipped sections are not saved.

How do I make a quiz?

In the Settings tab under Quiz, turn on Make this a quiz. You can then set an Answer key with points for each question.

• Graded types are Multiple choice, Checkboxes, Dropdown and Short answer.
• For choice questions, the selected options must exactly match the correct set. On a Checkboxes question, picking only some of the correct options counts as wrong.
• For Short answer you can add several accepted answers. Case and leading or trailing spaces are ignored.
• Answer feedback, if you add it, is shown to respondents after they submit.
• Questions skipped because of branching do not count toward the maximum score.

Under Release score, choose "Immediately after submitting" or "Never". If you turn off Show correct answers and feedback, respondents only see their total score. Correct answers are never sent to the response page in advance.

What response settings are there?

These are under Responses in the Settings tab.

Setting	What it does
Collect email addresses	Choose Do not collect, Responder input, or Verified (signed-in account).
Limit to 1 response	Each account can respond only once.
Only signed-in people can respond	Respondents must sign in with a Parallax account.
Response limit	Stops accepting responses automatically once the number you set (up to 100,000) is reached.
Close responses at	Responses are not accepted after this time.

Turning on Limit to 1 response or Verified email collection automatically turns on Only signed-in people can respond, because both need to identify respondents by account. To let anyone respond without signing in, turn both of those off.

Can I change how the form looks to respondents?

Use Presentation and Theme in the Settings tab.

• Show progress bar: shown when there is more than one section.
• Shuffle question order: questions are shuffled within each section only.
• Show link to submit another response: hidden on forms limited to one response.
• View results summary: respondents can see a chart summary of all responses after submitting. Free-text answers, "Other" text and scores are not shared.
• Confirmation message: the text shown after submitting. Leave it empty to show the default message in the respondent's language.
• Theme: pick a theme color and a title font (Default or Serif), and the header, buttons, selections and chart colors all change together.

A linear scale starts at 0 or 1 and goes up to at most 10. A rating can have 3 to 10 stars.
